stressed pet.

As awesome as the hustle and bustle of the holiday season can be, it can also be a bit stressful. While you may be worrying about gift buying and party planning, though, pet holiday anxiety can look a little bit different. At Broadway Oaks Animal Hospital, we understand that managing pet anxiety during the holidays is important. We are happy to help share all of our best tips for  managing pet anxiety during the holidays.

Calling It When You See It

Perhaps the biggest part of managing pet holiday anxiety is being able to identify that it is occurring! Do you know signs that your pet may be stressed?

Stress can show itself in different ways, but some signs that your pet may be anxious can include:

  • Changes in behavior
  • Changes in appetite
  • Weight loss
  • Hiding more than normal
  • Decreased social interaction
  • Overgrooming/other obsessive behaviors
  • Loss of housetraining
  • Digestive upset
  • Destructive behavior
  • Increased vocalization
  • Excessive panting
  • Pacing or restlessness

Some pets may exhibit signs of anxiety year-round, but for others holiday activities like parties, changes to their environment, and alterations in schedules can lead to trouble.

Managing Pet Anxiety During the Holidays

If you think that your pet may be stressed, don’t wait to act. Managing pet holiday anxiety means being proactive. A comfortable and secure environment important to the happiness and health of both you and your pets.

Be sure to:

  • Remove the anxiety inducing stimuli if possible – If there is an identifiable cause of anxiety that can be fixed, take action. A scary decoration can be taken down or your pet can be secured in a quiet, familiar location during a loud celebration. Some stressors are non-negotiable, but if you remove the smaller ones, you can help your pet navigate the season better.
  • Enrich your pet’s environment – Take time to be sure that your pet is getting exercise and social interaction on a daily basis. Holiday schedules can be hectic, but making an effort to allow your pet a predictable and enriching environment can make a huge difference. Take some time to create a sanctuary for your pet to retreat to should they need an escape.
  • Familiarize yourself with pheromones – Synthetic pheromones such as Feliway and Thunderease are designed to create a sense of security and well-being for your pet. These products come in collars, plug-in diffusers, and sprays, and can be very helpful.
  • Ask about supplements – There are many over-the-counter supplements that might help with mild holiday anxiety. Be sure to contact us to ask if they are safe for your pet.

Some pets may require actual medications to relieve anxiety. If you think your pet might benefit, schedule an appointment with ust  to discuss your options if your pet seems to need more.

The holidays can be a stressful time for pets and people. Be sure to watch for signs of stress in your pet and intervene as needed.
